Another Honor for Gretchen Bleiler

Posted by Gurl Ryder 0 comments
Gretchen Bleiler was named Adventurer of the Year by National Geographic's Adventure Magazine's December 2008/January 2009 issue.  In the article, Bleiler explains why she took a year off after the 2006 Winter Olympics and what she did to regain her passion for snowboarding and life.  It just goes to show that even when you think you have it all, you sometimes need to go outside your element to discover yourself and what life means to you. Congrats to Gretchen for landing this honor!

Guilt-free Funday Sundays

Posted by Gurl Ryder 0 comments
I don't remember a single Sunday where my father didn't wake us up at 8AM to attend church service when I was a kid.  So naturally, I try to instill the same values of attending church on Sundays with my family now as much as I can. But ever since I've adopted snowboarding into my life, waking up at 6AM on Saturdays and Sunday mornings just to arrive at the resort by 7AM, I find my church attendance drop during the winter season.  Luckily, more and more churches are having services on other days of the week so I am still able to get in on my time with God.  But for those close to Squaw Valley, Tahoe Resort Ministries offer Sunday services at 2PM at the top of Links Chairlift beginning December 14th through Easter Sunday, April 12th. What a great idea especially for those, like myself, who often times feel a bit of guilt for choosing to ride on Sundays rather than attend church service! It would be nice to get more ministries to organize meetings like these.

Music to My Ears

Posted by Gurl Ryder 0 comments
As I continue my little quest to network with people in the snowboarding industry, friends, casual riders, businesses, something caught my eye as I found a new friend on Twitter.  Her profile directed me to a website called www.ithreesixty.com.  First of all, the site looks awesome!  You can tell they're still working on the site, but the message is clear.

We all want to live a wireless life, it's simple and causes less distractions.  If you're one of those riders who likes to listen to your iPod when shredding the mountains like I do, then you know how annoying it is to get your jacket or a button caught on your headphone wire.  I like to keep my iPod in my pants jacket, and run the wires under my shirt, but it still manages to get caught on my pants' button sometimes, especially when jibbing!

Then when I saw what iThreeSixty had to offer, I was stoked! This company produces headbands/beanies with built in headphones that connects to your iPod internally! It works with certain generation Nanos and Shuffles and comes in two different colors at the moment.  I have yet to try it but hopefully I will be able to soon.  I can't wait! I'm always a big fan of trying new products, espcially for riding!

Want to know what your favorite Pro Snowboarder thinks is the top terrain parks in the U.S. Forbes Traveler has compiled a list of the terrain parks and asked a group of pro riders on their opinion of which is best.  So the expert panel consists of Gretchen Bleiler, Molly Aguirre, Hans Alund, Brett Butcher, Jeremy Jones, Rob Kingwill, Priscilla Levac, Chad Otterstrom, Shayne Pospisil, and Bev Vuilleumier. And they narrowed it down to eight parks which they believe are one of the best on this continent, in no particular order:

  • Northstar-at-Tahoe Recommended by Jeremy Jones & Bev Vuilleumier
  • Whistler Blackcomb Recommended by Priscilla Levac
  • Mammoth Mountain Recommended by Molly Aguirre & Rob Kingwill
  • Snowmass Recommended by Gretchen Bleiler

Priscilla Levac's Cilla Layers

Posted by Gurl Ryder 0 comments
If you're up shredding in the mountains often, you know that you need a good descent stock of shirts to wear underneath your jacket to keep warm at the same time fashionable without looking like a snowbum.  But there are still very limited options for women riders so sometimes we have to improvise.  My improvisation usually includes creating my own designed t-shirts and finding ways to stay warm and dry by layering with Underarmour.  Although it has worked well for me the past few years, I'm tired of looking like I just walked out of a football field! But thanks to pro rider, Priscilla Levac and her innovative and extremely CUTE designs of first layers for us girls!

Cilla
, is the brand of Levac's line of first layers which includes tops that are long enough to cover your tush while staying dry! The bottom part of the shirt is waterproof which keeps you nice and dry while the top portion of the shirts are made of eco-friendly polyester materials.  Yes! Not only are these layers cute, fashionable, made just for girls, but they're also earth friendly!

You can find Cilla at various resorts and stores throughout the U.S. and Canada as well as the girls specific online store, www.shreddingbetty.com
